GLITCH ARCHIVES // meta mo(nu)ments
Circa
2014
Excerpts from a video installation for a collaborative project META MO(NU)MENTS.
The project was part of a ‘BE STOGO’14 art festival taking place in Kaunas, Lithuania.
In this project, artists were invited to explored how certain values of art and culture change over time.
Old post-soviet sculptures and monuments were chosen as an object of experimentation and research on the set topic.
Below are some excerpts from the project description:
Shaping our living environment is a continuous process. According to our needs, we add new objects that have a functional or aesthetic meaning that correlate with the needs of our time. With objects, we give meaning to our being, leave a mark for ourselves and the future generations, as well as create a collective memory.
Over time, objects change in their nature and due to human activity. Objects lose their intended physical presentation due to the signs of time or destructive activities of humans.
Inevitably, the visual relevance of the context disappears as the environment and generations change. It seems as if they are stuck in time, no longer having a direct connection with the environment through their original meaning.
The (META) MONUMENTS project contemplates deconstruction, reconstruction, and transformation of the state-of-the-art in Kaukas alley and Kaunas Public Library park. Through various artistic means, the objects become installations, parts of performances and sound art, figures of public reading and so on.
The projects a
im was to rethink existing objects that have grown into the ever changing environment and became stagnant relicts of the past. With creative experimentation, we are able to open up new ways of seeing objects, realizing their original intentions and perhaps integrate the original meanings in the new surroundings.
